I love My Birdies

About Us

The proprietor of this safe haven for flora and fauna is impelled by her abiding compassion for natural wildlife. In keeping with her life-long devotion to animals, she has designed a vibrant, miniature ecosystem for a vast array of desert life. Her mission is to provide a sanctuary for animals whose natural habitat has been compromised due to human encroachment.

Myriad birds call this beautiful place home—including scaly-breasted munia, western tanagers, quail, doves, burrow owls, large owls, and a wide variety of humming birds. The oasis is also frequented by a gaggle of wild mallard ducks. Other aerial creatures
that visit the habitat include giant night moths (notably white-lined sphinx and fivespotted hawk moths), red-tailed hawks, and falcons. Honey bees also depend on the venue to thrive. It even serves as a stop-over venue for transient species like Canadian
geese and a much-needed space for the endangered monarch butterfly.

Terra-formed to accommodate a full range of desert life, this bastion of tranquility boasts desert iguanas (notably: large fringe-toed and zebra-tailed lizards), ring snakes, Mojave
shovel-nosed snakes, jack rabbits, road-runners, and legions of desert geckos—all of which rely on this protected habitat for their well-being. Proprietors often need to shoe away coyotes, great egrets, and other predators that are seeking a tasty treat; but even these interlopers are respected as members of the animal kingdom.

The flora of the refuge is primarily comprised of lantanas, bougainvilleas, white datura, and oleander. There is also little waterfalls, along with an assortment of mulberry trees, bay laurels, and honeysuckles. All the lush vegetation is interspersed with a thoughtful assortment of pretty flowers—creating a picturesque environment for each beloved creature.

The sanctuary’s dedicated custodian is accompanied by a loyal brigade of cats and dogs, each of whom she considers family. Her enchanting ecosystem includes a tranquil Koi Pond populated by various tortoises, box turtles, painted turtles, red-ear slider turtles, lesser sirens, and—of course—a plethora of magnificent koi fish. The result is a wonderland—in which mother nature is allowed to flourish.
